Career Development
Graduates of the Graduate Institute of Art History, NTNU possess deep knowledge of art and strong capabilities in cultural analysis, leading to diverse and extensive career choices.
Common career paths include positions in museums, art galleries, and cultural research institutions, as well as becoming art market professionals, arts magazine editors, and cultural heritage preservation and restoration specialists. Additionally, our graduates pursue careers in media, education, publishing, and the broader cultural and creative industries. Many also choose to continue their academic journey by enrolling in Ph.D. programs to become professional scholars or researchers.
Regardless of whether students aim for academic research or industry roles, the Institute is committed to assisting them in developing their professional expertise and achieving their career goals.
Internship
The Institute strongly encourages students to participate in internships to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application. We provide a wide range of internship channels, information, and opportunities, encouraging students to pursue internships at museums, art galleries, commercial galleries, cultural institutions, and research centers.
Through these experiences, we aim to help students get involved in exhibition planning, artifact conservation, art education and promotion, and related research work. This allows students to gain in-depth knowledge of the operations of the art and cultural industries, develop practical experience and professional skills, and establish a solid foundation for their future careers.

Public institutions typically announce their recruitment plans for winter and summer internships sequentially toward the end of the year and throughout the spring. Additionally, some organizations offer ad-hoc residency programs. Since the announcement schedules vary significantly among institutions, interested students are strongly encouraged to monitor the organizations’ official announcements directly.

National Museum of History | To promote exchange and cooperation between museums and academic institutions, the National Museum of History (NMH) has accepted internship applications from relevant domestic and international university departments since 1998. The NMH organizes the “Summer Internship Program for University Students” to arrange practical learning experiences that bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world application. Museum of Contemporary Art | Applications are open to currently enrolled students, aged 18 or older, from both domestic and international universities and graduate schools. Larger private institutions, such as auction houses and major private museums, typically have fixed internship recruitment programs. However, smaller organizations like private cultural foundations and commercial galleries do not usually advertise internship openings on a fixed schedule. If you are interested in interning at these types of organizations, we strongly advise you to reach out to them directly (cold-call) to inquire about potential opportunities.

Hong-ga Museum | The duties will involve assisting with tasks related to the Hong-Gah Museum’s diverse exhibition program, which includes contemporary solo shows, local cultural history research exhibitions, and international video art displays.
